Moving boxes

This cannot be emphasized enough: reserve an adequate number of moving boxes! It will undoubtedly make the entire moving process easier and prevent last-minute panic. With Muuttopalvelu’s various moving packages, you will have access to our high-quality plastic moving boxes suitable for packing even the heaviest items or clothing. We ensure that our boxes are always of good quality and clean.

As a general guideline, you will need approximately 1 box per square meter of living space (e.g., 60 boxes for a 60 m2 apartment).

When packing the moving boxes, it is also important not to overfill them. The box should only be filled up to the level of the carrying handles. This is because the boxes will be stacked during the move (usually no more than 4 boxes stacked on top of each other).

It is advisable to leave the top box slightly empty so that items on top don’t fall off during transportation, such as when using a dolly. Light items, such as papers, should be packed at the bottom to prevent them from flying off the top of the box during the move.

Packing

  • All loose items and objects, such as books from bookshelves, cabinets, tables, and drawers, should be packed in moving boxes.
  • Chests of drawers and cabinet doors and drawers should be left unlocked. For the duration of the move, they can be secured with, for example, hand stretch wrap, which is wrapped around the furniture. The key should be taped to the side for easy access. Packing tape should always be removed as soon as possible to avoid leaving marks.
  • Other furniture and delicate surfaces should be well protected, for example, with corrugated cardboard or bubble wrap.
  • Fragile items, such as dishes, porcelain, and decorative objects, should be well protected with packing or tissue paper before placing them in moving boxes.
  • Paintings, mirrors, and other fragile items should be carefully packed, using bubble wrap, for example. Suitable packing materials also include corrugated cardboard, corner protectors, and cardboard boxes for paintings. If using bubble wrap with a strong adhesive side, remember to pack it with the paper side facing the painting or mirror to avoid leaving marks on the surface.

  • Mattresses, box springs, and sofas should be protected to prevent dirt. This can be done, for example, with protective plastic covers.
  • Clothes should be packed in sturdy plastic bags. Seal the bag openings with tape. If the clothes are on hangers, fasten the bag around the hanger hook, leaving it exposed.

Floor Protection

If you feel that floor protection is necessary, you can use floor protection cardboard that is attached to the floor during the move. Make sure that the tape is suitable for your floor surface and that the cardboard stays in place. We recommend removing the tape from the floor immediately after the move.

Passageways

Reserve ample space for the moving truck in advance, especially if the yard or street is narrow. Unobstructed access significantly speeds up the entire moving process. Also, consider other factors such as weather or seasonal conditions.
